Coach Timothy S. Irving
Tim Irving is a USA Track and Field Level 1 Coach and an unlikely two-time marathon champion. He brings over three decades of executive experience leading high-performance and collaborative teams to the local running community. Tim’s coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in his lifelong commitment to athletics and is driven by a #MarathonMindset. He integrates his personal values into his approach, placing importance on health, friendships, family, personal development, and professional competence.
Recognizing that club athletes have distinct wants, needs, and aspirations compared to other competitive team environments, Tim tailors his coaching to prioritize the athlete’s long-term fitness and performance goals, taking into account their age and abilities. Above all, his primary objective is injury prevention, ensuring athletes can pursue their goals safely and sustainably.
Tim started his running career in Junior High School after an inspirational presentation by Dave McGillivray about a cross-country journey for charity. He went on to be one of the 100 participants in DMSE’s first event – the Bay State Triathlon at Wright’s Pond in Medford, MA, which was one of the first triathlons ever held in New England and the nation. His giving back to the running community spans several decades and he has volunteered at countless races, served as a race director for both trail and road races, and as the Director of the Race Around Waltham Series from 2012 through 2020. A lifelong runner and athlete, Tim has been a member of the Waltham Trail Runners, Pacers Running and the DC Capital Striders. He is a Boston Marathon qualified runner who has repeatedly supported the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention team, and he continues to assist the team in achieving its performance goals.
As a recognized leader in mentorship, training, communication, team building, and leadership, Tim offers athletes the guidance needed to navigate setbacks, adapt to changing conditions, and maintain the mental fortitude required to achieve long-term objectives.
